La Ofrenda (HOMEY x MMC)

Idea

It all began with the SF Free Fridge, a program within MMC’s People’s Pantry. Due to the 2021 wildfires and their impact on air quality, the fridge transitioned from the outdoor - take what you need model, originally on the 24th St Corridor, to an indoor - order and pick up curbside menu shopping model hosted at Mom Chairs. Through this Mini Mart model, MMC’s señoras and elders, stewarded the idea to expand and create a larger free community market.

MMC found a collaborative and aligned partner in HOMEY’s Guerrer@s De La Ciudad (City Warriors) Food Program.

Inauguration

A partnership was formalized between HOMEY and MMC. Both parties invested in tenant improvements for the 2070 Mission commercial space.

Decades earlier, the building had been home to HOMEY’s first office and moving in symbolized a homecoming for HOMEY, and a new beginning for MMC. La Ofrenda was manifested as a collaborative idea and was inaugurated October 2021.

Implementation

La Ofrenda was launched with no city funding and in 2021, groceries and operations were granted SFHSA funding, with HOMEY as contract lead and MMC as a subcontractor.

Our collaborative program approach with our partners is to continue our successful market model that we piloted from 2021- 2023 where clients are able to pick and choose their groceries and who are also able to contribute suggestions and feedback.

HOMEY & MMC co-host demographic specific markets to ensure client satisfaction and specific needs can be met with a dignified approach.

Program participants must live in San Francisco

MUST have proof of address (e.g. utility bill, pay stub, bill statement)

MUST have a valid identification (e.g. passport, CA ID, City ID, School ID, any form of identification

How to Apply

Must register in person at La Ofrenda 2070 Mission St San Francisco, CA 94110 and show proof of address, and have identification.
